Man’s winter parka, 1978, from the collection of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, Government of the NWT, Accession Number 979.010.014.

Man’s winter parka

This man's winter caribou fur coat, fur to outside, has an attached hood and three pairs of smoked tanned caribou skin thongs to tie the coat closed at front. It was made in 1978 by a group of twelve women during “Operation Heritage,” a project to teach traditional skills to younger women.

Evidence
Man’s winter parka.

Perspective
Dene winter coats must be left outside so the caribou hair doesn’t fall out, which it does when it’s warm.

Significance
The winter coat is worn over top of inner layers, worn inside.
